To say that a triathlon swimsuit is a fancy version of a regular swimsuit is like saying a triathlon swimmer is just a fancy version of a kid with water wings in a backyard pool. The serious athlete buys the triathlon wetsuit because it makes a real difference in swimming speed. How?

- Materials. Neoprene, and similar materials, exert a much lower “drag” in the water. The swimmer glides much better, almost as though the water were a native environment.

- Thickness. Triathlon wetsuits, at least at the high end, are not a uniform thickness. The torso part of the suit should be thicker to help the swimmer float higher in the water, and the arms and shoulders should be thinner, and therefore more flexible, to help the swimmer move faster.

- Construction. Unlike a regular swimsuit, a triathlon suit doesn’t allow any water inside. A loose neck opening, or floppy wrist opening, would act as water scoops were it not for tight seals. A competitive athlete doesn’t want the weight or the drag.

How these things are executed vary from brand to brand, but those are the basic features that separate the sharks from the fish.

Whether or not to wear a bike jersey is a matter of personal taste. Sure, wearing a brightly colored, tight-fighting jersey can get you some strange looks from passers-by, but you there are important benefits to wearing a bike jersey. The polyester material used in most bike jerseys will wick moisture away from the skin, and those bright colors provide an important boost in visibility to drivers when biking on busy roads.

As with most specialty sporting items, there is practically no upper limit on what one can spend on a biking jersey. That being said, a well-fitting, reasonably priced jersey can be had for less than $100. There are plenty of good deals to be had online – www.bikejerseys.com is a good place to start – but nothing beats shopping at an old-fashioned brick and mortar shop when it comes to getting a jersey that fits right.

Finding a reputable store with good prices can be tricky, so the best place to start is to ask around with members of your local bike club (most cities will have one). Once you’re at the store, don’t be afraid to try on a jersey before you plunk down that hard-earned cash.
